How to Replace a Garage Door Spring

Garage door springs counterbalance the weight of a garage door by allowing the door to be opened and closed easily, either by hand or by an automatic garage door opener. The high-tension steel has a limited life span but over time they lose their effectiveness. When it comes to replacing the Extension springs you can complete this job having to deal with spring tension.

The general process is very simple and you have to open the door for relieving the spring tension and disconnecting the spring from the track bracket and the spring pulley and separate the safety cable from one end; install the new spring, reinstall the pulley, and reconnect the safety cable. All you have done with Best Veteran Garage Door Repair.

In order to replace a broken garage door torsion spring, you need to replace tension in the torsion spring. Locate a winding bar in one of the holes in the spring's winding cone, and clear the tension one-quarter turn at a time. You have to Release the springs from the center cone with a 9/16-inch or 1/2-inch wrench. Clamp your vice grips to hold the torsion shaft from dropping when you take off the old springs.

Now you have to loosen the keys on the broken spring, slide the spring towards the end, loosen the keys on the drum, remove the cable, and slide the drum towards the middle of the torsion bar. Repeat this process on the other side of the garage door. To remove the old torsion spring, slide the torsion shaft towards the middle of the garage door, remove the drum and slide the first spring off. Make sure you're using the proper torsion spring for the left side (black paint) and the right side (red paint). The wire should come over the top of the spring.
